E-Way Bill: when you need it and how to make one
ई-वे बिल कब ज़रूरी है और कैसे बनाएँ
An E-Way Bill is an electronic document you need when you move goods by vehicle. It is created on the government's e-Way Bill System (ewaybillgst.gov.in) and has a 12-digit number that travels with the goods.
When is it needed?
- When the value of goods moved in one consignment is more than ₹50,000, including tax.
- For movement between states, ₹50,000 is the limit everywhere. For movement within a state, some states use a higher limit — check your state's rule.
- It is needed for sales, purchases, returns and some other movements such as job work.
Part A and Part B
- Part A has the invoice details: GSTIN of supplier and buyer, place of delivery, invoice number and date, HSN code, value of goods.
- Part B has the transport details: vehicle number, or the transport document number of the rail, air or ship.
How long is it valid?
For a normal vehicle, an E-Way Bill is valid for 1 day for every 200 km (or part of it). For over-dimensional cargo it is 1 day for every 20 km. The day ends at midnight.
Can it be cancelled?
Yes, within 24 hours of creating it, if the goods are not moved or the details are wrong. After that, it cannot be cancelled.
Making it with EAMBAS
- Make the sale bill as usual. If it is above your limit, EAMBAS reminds you that an E-Way Bill is needed.
- Open Services & Tools → E-Way Bill and pick the invoice. Party, GSTIN, address and items are filled in for you.
- Add the vehicle number and distance, then either type the E-Way Bill number you made on the portal (all plans) or tap Generate e-Way Bill to make it directly (Pro).
- The E-Way Bill prints as page 2 of your invoice, with its QR code.
Tip: always check the vehicle number and distance before generating. A mistake can only be fixed by cancelling within 24 hours.
